What are intrinsically safe mobile phones?
Intrinsically safe mobile phones are smartphones and feature phones designed so that their electrical and thermal energy can never ignite a flammable gas, vapour or dust, even if the phone is faulty. Ordinary phones can produce sparks at the battery, buttons or charging port, and their surfaces can get hot enough to cause ignition. That makes them unsafe in a refinery, chemical plant or fuel depot.
An intrinsically safe phone limits voltage, current and stored energy in every circuit and keeps its surface temperature below the ignition point of the surrounding atmosphere. This protection method is called intrinsic safety (“Ex i”). It is tested and certified to IEC 60079-0 and IEC 60079-11 under the IECEx scheme and the European ATEX directive.
With a certified intrinsically safe mobile phone, operators, maintenance crews and inspectors can stay connected inside the hazardous area itself. They don’t have to walk out of the zone to make a call or take a photo for a permit or inspection.
Hazardous area zones and where these phones can be used
Hazardous areas are classified by how often an explosive atmosphere is present. Always choose a phone whose certification matches the zone and the gas or dust group on your site.
Zone 0 / Zone 20
Explosive gas (Zone 0) or dust (Zone 20) is present continuously or for long periods. This needs Ga/Da equipment, and the phones on this page are not certified for it.
Zone 1 / Zone 21
An explosive atmosphere is likely during normal operation. The HAEXC FP103Ex and SP104Ex carry Gb/Db equipment protection, so they are suitable here.
Zone 2 / Zone 22
An explosive atmosphere is unlikely and short-lived if it occurs. Zone 1/21 certified phones can also be used in Zone 2/22.

How to read the Ex marking: Ex ib IIC T4 Gb
| Code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Ex | Equipment protected for use in explosive atmospheres |
| ib | Intrinsic safety, level “b”: safe with one fault, suitable for Zone 1 and Zone 2 |
| IIC | Gas group IIC, the most demanding group (hydrogen, acetylene); also covers IIA and IIB |
| T4 | Maximum surface temperature 135 °C |
| Gb | Equipment protection level for gas Zone 1 |
| IIIC T130°C Db | Conductive dust group, 130 °C maximum surface temperature, suitable for Zone 21 |

Frequently asked questions about intrinsically safe mobile phones
What is an intrinsically safe mobile phone?
It is a phone designed and certified so that it cannot release enough electrical or thermal energy to ignite an explosive gas or dust atmosphere. Certification is to IEC 60079-11 under IECEx and/or ATEX.
Can I use these phones in Zone 1?
Yes. The HAEXC FP103Ex and SP104Ex are marked Ex ib IIC T4 Gb and Ex ib IIIC T130°C Db, so they are suitable for gas Zone 1 and dust Zone 21, as well as Zone 2 and Zone 22. They are not certified for Zone 0 or Zone 20.
What is the difference between intrinsically safe and explosion-proof?
Intrinsic safety (Ex i) limits the energy in the circuits so ignition is impossible. Explosion-proof or flameproof (Ex d) contains an internal explosion inside a strong enclosure. Phones use intrinsic safety because it keeps them light and portable.
Can an ordinary rugged phone with a case be used in a hazardous area?
No. A rugged or IP68 phone is not intrinsically safe unless it carries an Ex certification. Only phones with an ATEX or IECEx marking that matches your zone should be taken into a hazardous area.
Do these phones support push-to-talk?
Yes. Both models have a dedicated PTT key and an SOS key, and they work with 4G VoLTE and Wi-Fi for voice, data and PTT applications.
