IFM Inductive Sensors

Non-Contact Metal Detection — Proven in Industry

IFM Inductive Sensors are industry-leading, non-contact detection devices that reliably sense metallic objects without physical contact. Built for the most demanding factory environments, these sensors offer exceptional switching accuracy, long service life, and full IO-Link compatibility for Industry 4.0 integration.

What is an Inductive Sensor?

An Inductive Sensor is a non-contact electronic proximity switch that detects metallic objects using the principle of electromagnetic induction. When a metal target enters the sensor’s oscillating electromagnetic field, it induces eddy currents in the target, causing measurable energy loss that triggers the sensor’s output switching.

IFM Inductive Sensors are among the most trusted in the global automation industry. Manufactured in Germany with precision-engineered coil systems and advanced ASIC electronics, IFM sensors deliver unmatched repeat accuracy, long service life, and stable operation even in the harshest environments — including high-temperature, high-vibration, and coolant-heavy machining centres.

As the Authorized Distributor of IFM Electronic in India, Render Tech India supplies the complete range of IFM Inductive Sensors across all form factors — cylindrical M8, M12, M18, M30, and flat/rectangular housings — in flush and non-flush mounting configurations, with PNP, NPN, or IO-Link outputs. Whether you need standard sensing for position feedback on a conveyor or a specialized sensor for weld-field immunity in an automotive body shop, IFM has a solution and Render Tech India delivers it to your door.

How Inductive Sensors Work

A four-stage electromagnetic process delivers reliable, repeatable non-contact detection every time.

01

Oscillation

An internal LC oscillator generates a high-frequency alternating electromagnetic field that radiates from the sensor’s active face into the surrounding area.

02

Field Interaction

When a metallic target enters this field, eddy currents are induced on the surface of the metal object, drawing energy from the oscillating circuit.

03

Amplitude Drop

The energy drawn by the eddy currents causes the amplitude of the oscillation to decrease — the closer the target, the greater the amplitude reduction.

04

Output Switching

A trigger circuit continuously monitors oscillation amplitude. When the drop crosses a defined threshold, the sensor switches its output (ON/OFF or IO-Link signal) reliably and repeatably.

IFM Inductive Sensor Types

Available in a wide range of form factors, sensing ranges, and output configurations to match every application.

Inductive Cylindrical Sensors

M8 · M12 · M18 · M30

The most widely used form factor in automation. Threaded cylindrical housing allows easy mounting in

standard brackets. Available in stainless steel and PTFE-coated versions for corrosive environments. PNP, NPN, and IO-Link outputs available.

Inductive Flat / Block Sensors

Sensors for limited space

Compact flat-pack sensors for space-constrained installations. Ideal for end-of-arm tooling on

robots, gripper position feedback, and slot mounting in machine structures. Long sensing ranges relative to compact size.

IFM Weld-immune Sensors

DC / AC Weld Field

Specially designed with weld-field suppression technology for use on automotive body-shop welding

lines. Immune to magnetic interference from DC and AC weld currents, preventing false triggering and ensuring reliable cycle counting near welding equipment.

IFM Factor 1 Sensors

All Metals Equal Range

Standard inductive sensors have different sensing ranges depending on the metal type (correction factor). Factor 1

sensors use special coil technology to provide the same sensing distance regardless of whether the target is iron, aluminium, brass, or stainless steel — eliminating the need for range recalculation.

IFM IO-Link Sensors

Smart / Industry 4.0

IFM’s IO-Link inductive sensors provide bi-directional digital communication beyond simple ON/OFF switching.

Transmit real-time distance values, temperature, switching state, and diagnostic data directly to a PLC or IO-Link master for predictive maintenance and smart factory applications.

IFM ATEX / Ex Sensors

Zone 0, 1, 2, 21, 22

Certified for use in explosive atmospheres as per ATEX and IECEx standards. Suitable for chemical plants, oil & gas facilities,

pharmaceutical production, and grain handling environments. Available in intrinsically safe (Ex ia) and flameproof (Ex d) versions.
