Level Sensor
A level sensor is a device used to detect or measure the amount of a material—such as a liquid or solid—inside a tank, bin, or other container.
It typically converts this information into an electrical signal for monitoring or control.
Level sensors help manage storage levels, avoid spills or overflows, and support automation across a wide range of applications, including industrial systems, vehicles, and home appliances.
Types of Measurement
Level sensors generally fall into two main types: point level sensors, which indicate whether the material has reached a specific height, and continuous level sensors, which measure the level throughout the entire range.
Contact and Non-Contact Methods
Some sensors work by coming into direct contact with the material, while others measure the level without any physical contact.
Common Uses
These sensors are widely used in various settings—for example, tracking material levels in storage tanks, managing the filling process in production lines, and detecting levels in everyday appliances like refrigerators and washing machines.
Examples of How They Work
Hydrostatic
Determines the liquid level by measuring the pressure at the bottom of the container, which increases with depth.
Capacitive
Detects changes in electrical capacitance caused by the presence or absence of a material near the sensor.
Ultrasonic
Uses sound waves that bounce off the surface of the material; the time it takes for the echo to return is used to calculate the distance.
Optical
Uses light and the principle of internal reflection to sense whether a liquid is present at a certain point.
RECHNER Encoder
A RECHNER level sensor is an industrial detection device made by Rechner Sensors that measures filling heights using capacitive technology. It tracks liquids, pastes, powders, and solid granules accurately inside tanks or silos
Baumer Sensor
Euroswitch Sensor
Microsonic Sensor
A Microsonic level sensor is a non-contact, ultrasonic device made by microsonic that uses high-frequency sound waves to measure distance and monitor liquid or solid fill levels with high accuracy.
IFM Sensor
An ifm level sensor is an electronic industrial device made by ifm electronic that measures the amount of liquid, solid, or bulk material inside a tank, silo, or container.
